BIZZARRI, Pietro (ca.1530-1583) - Senatus populique Genuensis rerum domi forisque gesatrum historiae atque annales. Antwerp: Christopher Plantin, 1579. First edition, rare on the market, of this history of Genoa. The work was added to the Index in 1590, probably at the request of Umberto Foglietta, official historian of the Republic of Genoa, who had just concluded his history of the city. Pages 371-376 are dedicated to the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus and the work also deals with Corsica, from its origin to its history. Folio (335 x 217mm). Woodcut printer's device on title, arms of the city of Genoa printed in red and back on verso, woodcut headpieces and initials (occasional light browning, few tiny wormholes to the final leaves, erased early ownership note on title). Contemporary limp vellum, later manuscript title on spine (without ties, light staining). Provenance: BAZW (bookplate) - Bibliothek Zurich e Archivium V. Prov. Helvetica (cancelled stamps).
