A fascinating collection of 96 original, unpublished drawings to illustrate the Divine Comedy by Leopoldo Cenni, a French illustrator of Italian origins active in the first quarter of the twentieth century. The plates are finished and show no signs of indecision, which may suggest that they were intended as preparatory plates for an illustrated edition of the Commedia that never saw the light. The style of the illustrations reflects that of the French caricature newspapers of the turn of the century with an influence of Art Nouveau taste; a lucky rediscovery in the year of the anniversary of the Divin Poeta's death. (510 x 330mm). A collection of 96 drawings, most of them in watercolour, with at the verso a caption with the "Canto" to which the illustration refers to. Preserved within a 20th-century portfolio (light wear to portfolio). The lot is accompanied by a export license.
