VASI, Giuseppe (1710-1782) - Delle magnificenze di Roma antica e moderna. Rome: stamperia del Chracas; stamperia di Apollo, presso gli eredi Barbiellini; Niccolò, e Marco Pagliarini mercanti di libri a Pasquino, 1747-1758. First edition of the first 8 books of the masterpiece by Giuseppe Vasi, engraver and architect, master of Giovan Battista Piranesi. The views are an important and exhaustive source for learning about the architecture and customs of 18th century Rome and are considered the masterpiece of the artist who was involved in the realization for twenty years. . 8 works in 4 volumes, oblong 4to (270 x 390mm). Engraved dedication, frontispiece in vol. I, vignettes on title, 159 numbered plates (of 160, plate 87 is missing), 8 unnumbered plates, 28 illustrations in text (some scattered foxing and browning, few occasional repaired marginal tears). Contemporary binding backed in leather, title on gilt spine label (some chips and light wear to spine and covers, bindings weak).
