ZEILER, Martin (1589-1661) - Topographiae Italiae. Frankfurt: Mattheus Merian, 1688. A good copy of the second edition of this important and well-illustrated work on the topography of Italy with two splendid large-format bird's-eye views of Venice and Rome. Compared to the first edition of 1640 there are 9 more plates. Folio (340 x 202mm). Engraved frontispiece by Sandrart, title with woodcut vignette, woodcut headpieces and initials, 52 engraved plates including two splendid large-format and folding bird's-eye views of Venice and Rome. SBN calls for 52 plates but we recently sold a copy with 53 which also included a view titled "Parte del Golfo di Coron et Messeniacus" (small repaired tear to bottom of engraved frontispiece and title without loss, large view of Rome reinforced at top margin and with few repaired tears, view of Piazza San Marco reinforced at outer margin with a repaired tear, some other occasionl small tears and stains). Contemporary mottled calf, gilt border on covers, spine gilt, red speckled edges (rebacked preserving original spine).
