BUONFIGLIO, Costanzo Giuseppe (1547-1622) - Messina citta nobilissima, descritta in VIII. Libri. Venice: Giovanni Antonio e Giacomo de' Franceschi, 1606. A fascinating copy with various and noble provenance of the first edition of this fundamental text for the study of the history of the Sicilian city. The book is an important testimony of bibliophile collecting: the copy was first part of the library of Count Camillo Gustavo Galletti and it was later acquired, together with a large part of the books, by Baron Horaz Landau. Dedicated by Buonfiglio to Don Andrea Arduino Marquis of Sorito, it is divided into 8 books which describe the first founders of the city, the sites, sacred and public buildings, port, fortresses, roads, squares, the travelling of princes, funerals, sacred and secular feasts, customs and other notable episodes. 4to (227 x 163mm). Engraved printer's device on title, engraved portrait, woodcut initials and headpieces (light browning due to the quality of the paper, slight staining on title). Editorial blue wrappers (spine reinforced, slight wear to extremities). Provenance: Colleg. Paris Societ Jesu (ownership inscription on title) - GALLETTI, Gustavo Camillo (1805-1868; stamp on title. Bibliophile and book collector of noble family. In 1879, a large part of his collection was acquired by Baron Landau) - LANDAU, Horaz von (1824-1903; ex libris. Baron, banker of Jewish-Ukrainian origin, collector and bibliophile, in 1879 he acquired about two thirds of the library of Count Galletti).
