"The work illustrates the first detailed anatomical figures of obstetrics" (Garrison and Morton). Jacob Rueff, a doctor from Zurich, was responsible for the learning of the canton's midwives. A disciple of Rösslin, he completed the first edition of the work in 1554, which immediately became the most popular obstetrics manual of the Renaissance. The edition illustrated by Jost Amman is remembered as one of the most famous medical illustrated books of the 16th century. The work is not only addressed to midwives and pregnant women, but also to doctors and general practitioners. 4to (200 x 155mm). Engraved vignette on title, engraved coat of arms of the dedicatee at the beginning of the preface, numerous illustrations in the text, 6 of which are full page (slight browning, slight waterstaining on the upper margin of the first leaves and some other small stains). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (some chips, small tears and stains).
